Bedrock City Star Trails – Roadside Attraction Kitsch Like You’ve Never Seen It!

Bedrock City Star Trails (1455)

I came across Bedrock City as a kid on the way to the Grand Canyon, and first photographed it at night in 2015. It felt great to return here. I also got to meet the owner briefly. Bedrock City, Arizona is a roadside attraction, a recreation of The Flintstones’ town. I photographed this on a cool, quiet evening, with the sound of coyotes howling in the distance.
~~
This is a real night photo. I illuminated the exterior and interior with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 馃榾

Nikon D7000/Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens. The long exposure photo is 50 minutes total, with one hundred images “stacked” as a composite, each 30 seconds f/8 ISO 1000 on 2017-06-07 23:55.

Photo: Home Sweet Home – Bedrock City Night Photo with Light Painting

6555kenlee-2015-06-30-0439_arizona-bedrockcity-flintstonehouseinterior-105sf8iso200-3850k-1000pxThe living room of Fred Flintstone’s house. All light was supplied by illumination with an LED flashlight.

“Flintstones, meet the Flintstones!” Bedrock City is a roadside attraction on the way to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Roadside attractions were built as “tourist traps” with gift shops and things to do for kids, a place where a family could rest after a long drive on the way to somewhere. Built in 1972, Bedrock City was modeled after “The Flintstones” cartoon from the 1960s. And Bedrock City still survives. For now. Owner Linda Speckels is selling it for $2 million to someone who will keep Bedrock City operating. Bedrock City has a Fredmobile train ride looping through Mt. St. Wilma (a volcano). The Bedrock Theater plays Flintstones cartoons with the audio broadcast over loudspeakers. There’s a campsite, diner, convenience store, and a large gift shop. And of course, there is Bedrock City, built to resemble the stone age town of Bedrock from the cartoon “The Flintstones”. Will it be here in a year? Who knows.

With a nod of gratitude to Troy Paiva, pioneer of this sort of light painting photography.

The Glow of Mission San Xavier Del Bac, Arizona

6972kenlee-2015-07-05-1930_arizona-sunset-sanxavierdelbac-HDR-keystonecorrection-1000px2A gorgeous fiery desert sunset at Mission San Xavier Del Bac near Tucson, Arizona. Construction began for the Mission in 1783, when Southern Arizona was part of New Spain, and is made of low-fire clay brick, stone and lime mortar. The Mission is situated in the center of a centuries-old Indian settlement of the Tohono O鈥檕dham (formerly known as Papago), located along the banks of the Santa Cruz River.

The original builders never finished the east bell tower. It has no dome, and for about 120 years many of its bricks lacked a protective plaster. One is that to this day, the east tower of the Mission has never been completed. Several records exist to explain about why it was left unfinished. When the original loan was determined not to be enough, the priests decided not to finish it so that no taxes would have to be paid under the King of Spain’s Royal Decree that unfinished buildings paid no taxes. However, some old records also reveal that a popular Pima Indian worker was killed during construction in 1784 when he fell down off a ladder and was impaled through his head with an iron bar, with no other Indian wanting to work on the tower.
