Riders On The Storm (Grand Canyon)

I actually take photos during the bright light of day! No long exposure, no light painting here!

These are seemingly the only three people at the Grand Canyon to not be busting out selfie sticks. 😀 The incredible incoming storm was sufficiently enthralling.

Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos, November 2013 – Mexican Woman

A Mexican woman participating in Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead, November 2013. I love the way she is lit by the sun here.  No artificial lighting is used in this photo or the previous Dia de los Muertos photos this month.  Shooting when the sun is low can create some beautiful light, so I like to use that quite often.

Dia de los Muertos is about love, gathering families and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls and the favorite foods, beverages, and affects of the departed. Historians trace the origins to indigenous observances 2500-3000 years ago ago as well as to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.

Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead 2013 – Children Nuns

We’ll continue this month with some photos from Dia de los Muertos, one of my favorite holidays.

This is a photo of children participating in Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead, November 2013. The image is creepy, frightening, sweet, and loving, reflecting the holiday, where people come together to give love to ones who have passed on. Thank you so much!

Infinity Basketball

I like basketball.  I played it in school.  I watch it.  I like it.  So this combines two passions, photography and basketball.  And this is a rather minimalist sort of photo that I thought you might find interesting, something a bit different from the long exposure and night sky photos that you usually see here…just to show everyone that I do in fact appear in broad daylight with cameras.  That you can ball by the Pacific is all good.

So I’m posting this in honor of the NBA season starting up.

Joshua Tree: Stone And Tree Revisited

Please click on the photo to view it larger and more clearly!  Thanks!

I returned to this stone and tree location to try another photo.  This time, instead of clicking a photo quickly as I was walking past, I took my time and set up the shot with a tripod.  I am thinking of printing this one to hang on the wall in at Blueberry Buddha Recording Studios (I’m also a recording engineer).

This one is a blending of two photos, one shot for a general overall exposure, and the other  exposed for just the foreground tree.  I then simply blended the foreground tree in a bit, a sort of handmade HDR to create a little more dynamic range in the photo.  I could have also done it by illuminating the tree with a flash, but was happy with blending them as well. Whatever works.

Equipment:  Nikon D7000, Tokina AT-X 116, Feisol tripod.

Featured Photo: Rock and Tree

Rock and Tree, Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree is otherworldly, and sometimes looks to me like a planet Captain Kirk and Spock might have beamed down on.  But I think this is rather captivating even by Joshua Tree standards. I shot this with a fairly small aperture to make certain both the narrow balancing rock and the lone tree, which is considerably closer to the camera, were both in focus.

Yes, this is another photo from my 28 April 2012 photographic trip to the desert, a 24-hour excursion for taking photos during both the day and night. This month we’ll be featuring many of these photos, and on June 1st, will discuss in detail the process of how the star trails photo from a couple of posts ago was created.
