Use your imagination, and perhaps you can see the Three Wise Men – Los Reyes Magos – in the rock formations here in this photo taken in Joshua Tree National Park on a cold winter day. And with that, I wish all of you a happy holiday.

The beautiful celestial movements around the North Star.

Pine Mountain Stupa Star Trails – Night Skies Over Pine Mountain Buddhist Temple!

I had the pleasure of staying overnight at the remote Pine Mountain Buddhist Temple, located in rural Ventura County, up in the mountains, sort of between Ojai and Frazier Park. I was able to take some night sky photos, as well as day photos, on the grounds of this beautiful retreat, and figured I’d share them with you. The people there were kind, generous, and welcoming, and made my brief stay a total joy.

Starry nights underneath the stupa at Pine Mountain Buddhist Temple and Meditation Retreat in the mountains of rural Ventura County, with this long exposure photo showing the movement of the stars around the North Star. A stupa typically contains relics of the Buddha and is used by Buddhists as a place of meditation.

Raining stars over the California desert, a long exposure photo showing the celestial movements of the heavens.

I’m always amazed at how much color comes out in a photo that is hidden or barely discernible when we are looking at it with our own eyes. I know this intellectually, of course, but am still amazed every time. It’s this sort of quality that further inspires me to slow down and really appreciate the night sky and how the world looks at night in general.

The Iconic Skull Rock in Joshua Tree (star trails long exposure)

This is one of the iconic features of Joshua Tree National Park, frequently photographed.  But perhaps not like this!  This is a long exposure photo showing the movement of the stars. I also light painted the rock with a flashlight, keeping the “eyes” largely in shadow to add to the mystery. Someone on Google+ thought this was “creepy”. But, after all, it’s called Skull Rock.

Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos, November 2013 – Mexican Woman

Please click on the photo to view it larger and more clearly!  Thanks!

A Mexican woman participating in Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead, November 2013. I love the way she is lit by the sun here.  No artificial lighting is used in this photo or the previous Dia de los Muertos photos this month.  Shooting when the sun is low can create some beautiful light, so I like to use that quite often.

Dia de los Muertos is about love, gathering families and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls and the favorite foods, beverages, and affects of the departed. Historians trace the origins to indigenous observances 2500-3000 years ago ago as well as to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.

Dia de los Muertos / Day of the Dead 2013 – Children Nuns

We’ll continue this month with some photos from Dia de los Muertos, one of my favorite holidays.

This is a photo of children participating in Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead, November 2013. The image is creepy, frightening, sweet, and loving, reflecting the holiday, where people come together to give love to ones who have passed on. Thank you so much!
