Surrealistic Art in the Nevada Night Sky

Saluting The Night Sky (6871)

The Car Forest is an art installation outside Goldfield, Nevada. I drove up from Beatty to photograph here on a gorgeous evening, surrounded by braying and sometimes galloping burros. Many of these cars were repainted since my last visit, some for the better, and some by idiots.
~~
This is a real night photo. I illuminated the exterior and interior with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 馃榾
~~
Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8 lens. The long exposure photo is 21 minutes total “stacking” three photos, each 7 minutes f/8 ISO 200 on 2017-06-11 00:03.

Ice Cream Truck Star Trails: International Car Forest of the Last Church, Goldfield, NV

I stacked this image, creating star trails just shy of four hours. I used Triggertrap to control my D7000. I forgot to put it on airplane mode or I would have gotten more than four hours. Oh well.
Outside the historic mining town of Goldfield, NV, in a desert dotted by Joshua Trees, you can see a field of old cars that are wildly painted and jammed into the ground at unlikely angles. This is the International Car Forest of the Last Church, created by Michael “Mark” Rippie and painted by Chad Sorg.聽In July 2014, I stayed in Goldfield and created night photos with light painting to enhance the bold colors of the painted cars even more. Light painting photos of this nature are often best done near a full moon, and on this particular night, I got fairly clear skies. A gifted light painting photographer named Ron PInkerton was also there for the entire evening, and we had a fun evening photographing this surreal location.
With a nod of gratitude to Troy Paiva and Lance Keimig, two photographers who largely pioneered this sort of light painting approach.. I don’t do this sort of light painting often, but their two books definitely had an influence on this photo.

Fun with lights. Light painting utilizes a number of “brushes” — lights of varying sorts serve as our brushes. This car was hit with a lime gel from an LED, and a red gel from a speedlight. And mother earth.

Ghost Towns of the Nevada Desert: Night Train (night photography with light painting)

3134-2014-07-10-170sf8iso400-goldfield_train-kenlee-almostBW-960pxPlease click on the photo to view it larger and more clearly! 聽Thanks!

In the early 1900s, Goldfield was the largest city in Nevada, a boom town fueled by the lust for gold. Early transportation to Goldfield involved walking, riding burros or horses, or stagecoaches and wagon through the Nevada desert. That changed in 1905 when the first train, operated by the Goldfield Railroad Company, arrived. Light painting photos of this nature are often best done near a full moon, and although occasionally plagued with cloudy skies, I managed to get some photos I was happy with in this historic almost-ghost town, with less than 500 inhabitants. All colored light work was done during the exposure, and is not a Photoshop creation. However, I liked the heightened drama of this when it was almost black and white, and decided to go with this instead of full-on color.

A distorted wide angle shot of the Columbia Bar, a frame house which was formerly an early residence in Goldfield. In 1996 it was remodeled into the Cactus Club and later renamed the Columbia Bar. It no longer appears to be open. But you can say that about a lot of things in Goldfield, NV, a tiny town that was formerly the largest city in Nevada during the early 1900s, when gold was found in them thar hills. Now less than 500 people remain. And apparently none of them drink or eat here. I’ve seen photos that appear to have gravesites to the left, but I don’t remember seeing them there. Then again, it was dark, and I can’t see everything all the time. I’m off the hook. 馃榾

The Goldfield Hotel is by far the largest, most dominant building in Goldfield, and at one point was considered one of the finest hotels west of the Mississippi. Built in 1907 at the height of the gold rush, the hotel is now thought by many to be haunted, and has been featured in TV shows. The hotel is currently not open for looking around, but plans are underway for reconstruction. I light painted this, although some of the lighting is from the nearby streetlights. Light painting photos of this nature are often best done near a full moon, and although occasionally plagued with dark cloudy skies, I kept shooting, clear skies or no.

This is the Sideboard Saloon ruin, originally built in 1907 by saloon keeper Patrick Mullin, with the doorway arch all that remains of what was once a one story wood building. The stone arch entrance still stands, and so I photographed it in the evening. Alien Blue (International Car Forest of the Last Church, Goldfield, NV light painting photography)

This alien car seems to have took a wrong turn.

Outside the historic mining town of Goldfield, NV, in a desert dotted by Joshua Trees, you can see a field of old cars that are wildly painted and jammed into the ground at unlikely angles. This is the International Car Forest of the Last Church, created by Michael “Mark” Rippie and painted by Chad Sorg. In July 2014, I stayed in Goldfield and created night photos with light painting to enhance the bold colors of the painted cars even more.
