Photo: The Black Church of The Red Sand Beach (Iceland)

The Black Church of The Red Sand Beach (2016-06-14 17:52)

For the first part of the trip, I traveled toward the west part of Iceland with a photographic group led by Lance Keimig.  We stopped at the Black Church near Raudisandur, or Red Sand Beach. The church is a typical Lutheran style for this region. This is probably one of the few days we had really clear skies on the whole trip, as it was overcast and cloudy most of the time. The black church is one of 3 black churches in Iceland. They are black because the exterior wood is painted with pitch, just like the hull of a boat to protect it from the harsh Icelandic elements.

Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon (2016-06-23 17:13)

The beautiful expanse of Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Although noticeably smaller than Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon, one is closer to the glacial tongue(here, it is Vatnajökull Glacier). The lagoon is ethereal in nature, and very quiet and peaceful. 1/640s f/11 ISO 100. D610/Nikkor 28-300mm.

Photo: Antonov Biplane Interior – Light Painting – Iceland

Antonov Biplane Interior (2016-06-15 11:15)

Westfjords of Iceland, Hnjotur Museum. This is the interior of an Antonov AN2 biplane, an old Russian workhorse that was the largest single-engine biplane ever produced, with this one allegedly abandoned after a dispute between two pilots about one’s flying ability, leaving the plane marooned in iceland.

I had to work very fast to get this shot, and consequently didn’t have time to photograph the cockpit. Because of the large amount of light streaming in, I used a relatively quick long exposure of 19 seconds at f/9 ISO 100, quickly illuminating the interior with a ProtoMachines LED2 and then closing the shutter. Nikon D610/Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8

Photo: The Stone Sea Monster of iceland – Long Exposure Photo

The Stone Sea Monster of Iceland (2016-06-18 19:01)

For the first part of the trip, I traveled toward the west part of Iceland with a photographic group led by Lance Keimig. This unusual rock formation protruding from the sea is the remains of an ancient extinct volcano Hvitserkur on the sea shelf. Hvitserkur, which translates to “white shirt” and derives its name from being covered in Shag and Cormorant guano, rises 15 meters, or nearly 50 feet from the sea. Icelandic legend has it that the rock was a troll who forgot to retreat from the light and was turned to stone in the sunrise, though from some angles it is said to look like a dragon drinking from the water, while others say that it looks like a sea monster frozen in stone. I’m going with the frozen sea monster. The geological oddity was commemorated on an Icelandic stamp in 1990.

Nikon D610/Nikkor 28-300mm. I took eight photos, each one at an eight-second exposure at f/22 ISO 100 and stacked eight of them together to create an even longer net exposure, this one 64 seconds in total to smooth out the water movements of the sea.

Aren’t You Glad You Have Dials (2016-06-17 14:04)

The interior of an abandoned herring factory in Djúpavík, Westfjords, Iceland. At the time it was built, 1935, this was the most enormous concrete building in iceland and one of the largest in Europe, and built in just one year. Herring oil was crucial for general health, and was taken as a supplement. But also, herring oil was used by the Germans to manufacture glycerin, the main ingredient in nitroglycerine, used in the creation of explosives, especially during WWII. I traveled here with a group of photographers, including Lance Keimig.

Nikon D610/Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 30s f/14 ISO 100. I “light painted” the interior, illuminating everything while the camera shutter was open, using a Protomachines LED2 flashlight for the various colored lighting. And yes, doing this brought a huge smile to my face. Also, I found it funny that a group of night photographers would travel together to Iceland, where the sun is out for around 21 hours a day.

Photo: I Am Puffin, Hear Me Roar

I Am Puffin, Hear Me Roar (2016-06-14 23:34)

 

This is a puffin in the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs in Iceland. And now, I will entertain you with some fun facts:

– Puffins only have their Technicolor bill part of the time, during mating season.

– They are nicknamed “sea parrots”, or sometimes “clowns of the sea”.

– Puffins are amazing swimmers, and can dive 60m underwater. So, like, that’d be almost 200 feet under the surface.

– The Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs are the westernmost part of Europe.

– Puffins can be found on menus of some restaurants around Reykjavik.

– I think this is the first time I ever seriously tried to photograph wild birds.

– I did not use any Photoshop Cartoon Function to make this fine bird look like Toucan Sam.
