About the Nightscaper Conference

Nightscaper Conference 2023
Nightscaper Conference 2023

Royce Bair created this community some years ago. National Parks at night began collaborating with him in early 2021. The first conference was held in 2019. The conference became a popular in-person event devoted to astro-landscape photographers, scientists, artists and activists who wish to enjoy and preserve the night skies.

Arches National Park at night.

The conference features Milky Way photographers, scientists, conservation groups and more. It attracts about 300 enthusiasts of all sorts. Beginning and seasoned photographers alike will be interested in this.

Due to health concerns, the Nightscaper Conference was postponed to May 2023.

Where is the Nightscaper Conference?

The conference will be live and in-person in Kanab, UT, near Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It’s also in reasonably close proximity to Bryce, Capitol Reef and Grand Canyon National Parks and other amazing public lands.

When is the Nightscaper Conference?

Save Our Stars - activism at Nightscaper Conference
Save Our Stars – activism at Nightscaper Conference

The 2023 conference will be held in the heart of the new moon week, May 18-21 2023.

The daytime conference leaves plenty of room for going out at night with speakers, as well as with friends new and old. Several speakers will also be offering local workshops before and after the conference as well! You can immerse yourself in this experience in one of the best dark sky areas to photograph in the world.

The Nightscaper conference lasts for four days. Each day’s activities begin in the late morning to accommodate those who were out shooting the night before. Daily lunches are included, as well as one dinner.

Who are the presenters?

The presenters will of course include Royce Bair. Also, there will be Jess Santos, MaryBeth Kiczenski, Matt Hill, Bryony Richards, Joshua Snow, Tim Cooper, Mike Shaw, Gabriel Biderman, Dr. Kah-Wai Lin, Paul Ziska, Lance Keimig, Chris Nicholson, and many more.

What is National Parks at Night?

National Parks at Night hold night photography workshops that provide top-shelf education both in the classroom and in the field, and are arguably the best in the world at doing so. Also, they have an extremely informative blog. And they also have held two Night Photo Summit virtual conferences. I am honored to have been a presenter for one of them.

Flashback: Big Blue Bus Burrowing Bottomward (light painting at night!)

How this bus stays up, I’m not sure. I came up here Thursday evening. There were two photographers, Matt and Justin, already here, but they left shortly afterwards for Bodie ghost town in California. I immediately began shooting, a bit dissatisfied with the shots I had taken the previous night, as the moon was blotted out by huge thunder clouds, and everything was very dark, not so conducive for this sort of light painting photography. Tonight was much better!

Outside the historic mining town of Goldfield, NV, in a desert dotted by Joshua Trees, you can see a field of old cars that are wildly painted and jammed into the ground at unlikely angles. This is the International Car Forest of the Last Church, created by Michael “Mark” Rippie and painted by Chad Sorg. In July 2014, I stayed in Goldfield and created night photos with light painting to enhance the bold colors of the painted cars even more. Light painting photos of this nature are often best done near a full moon, and during this evening, the clouds mostly cooperated!

With a nod of gratitude to Troy Paiva and Lance Keimig, who largely pioneered this sort of light painting photography. I don’t do this sort of light painting often, but their two books definitely had an influence on this photo.

Flashback: Ghost In the Machine: Gold Point Iron Workshop (Light Painting In a Ghost Town!)

Are ghosts still working the late night shift in the iron workshop? An evocative ghost town from yesteryear in the Nevada Desert, Gold Point, formerly Lime Point and Hornsilver before the name change to reflect mining for gold, is a well-preserved ghost town run by Herb Robbins. I believe this iron workshop was built by the Great Western Mine Company. I initially saw it, perched up on a hill, overlooking the expansive desert, and knew I had to photograph this. I lit the interior with a speedlight with a red gel to give the feeling of someone still working long nights. It took quite a number of tries to get this just the way I wanted it to feel. All colored light work was done during the exposure, and is not a Photoshop creation. I stayed here for two nights, photographing the town, enjoying the beauty, and eating delicious food that Herb and Sandy serve. I loved this experience, and hope to return someday. These ghost towns and mines are a part of our rich history, and I am fascinated by the stories they still have left to tell. And these voices seem to whisper a bit more at night.

Fun with lights. Light painting utilizes a number of “brushes” — lights of varying sorts serve as our brushes. This car was hit with a lime gel from an LED, and a red gel from a speedlight. And mother earth.

Fasten your seat belts. If you can find ’em.

Light painting photos of this nature are often best done near a full moon, and although occasionally plagued with cloudy skies, I managed to get some photos I was happy with here at this strange art installation.

With a nod of gratitude to Troy Paiva and Lance Keimig, who largely pioneered this sort of light painting photography. I don’t do this sort of light painting often, but their two books definitely had an influence on this photo.
