Breezy Cottage By The Sea (5011)

Bombay Beach, Salton Sea, California, U.S. This is a real photo taken at night. This evening, everything was illuminated by a big bright moon, almost bright enough to read a book. And setting my tripod-mounted camera to a long exposure made the camera much more sensitive to light than our eyes on this already bright evening. This is why this photo seems brighter than what we might see at night. It is not due to post-processing. The moon, which reflects light from the sun, also makes the sky bluer, and when the photo is a long exposure photo, the sky will appear brighter, making the blue more apparent. I also illuminated parts of this scene with a handheld LED flashlight while the camera shutter was open. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 😀

The streaks in the sky are stars, showing the movement across the sky while the camera shutter was open and capturing the photo. The movement of the stars are created by the rotation of the earth, and the long exposure photo shows these movements over time. I am fascinated with how a single long exposure photo can show movements and the cumulative effects of light in a single image. Thank you for reading this and looking at the image. -Ken

One Eyed Dodge – Light Painted Night Photo

Pearsonville Auto Salvage Yard, Mojave Desert, California. We had these amazing clouds most of the evening, creating fantastic shapes with or without long exposures.

This is a real photo taken at night. Everything was illuminated by a big bright moon, an almost full moon, almost bright enough to read a book. And setting my tripod-mounted camera to a long exposure made the camera much more sensitive to light than our eyes on this already bright evening. This is why this photo seems brighter than what we might see at night. It is not due to post-processing. The moon, which reflects light from the sun, also makes the sky bluer, and when the photo is a long exposure photo, the sky will appear brighter, making the blue more apparent. I used a handheld LED flashlight to illuminate the automobile, and then used it with a homemade snoot to hit the front headlights to make them glow a bit more while the camera shutter was open for a long time. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 😀

Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8, 174 seconds total @ f/8 ISO 200. Oct 2016. I photographed this with Tim Little, Steve McIntyre, and Troy Paiva near a full moon. Troy is an enormous pioneer in light painting night photography.

Photo: Samuelson’s Rocks (long exposure night photo with light painting, Joshua Tree National Park)

Another fun mile-long walk in the dark of night across the desert to photograph this area, with some fascinating carved rocks left by a former miner and rancher in the 1920s. I am grateful to my handy GPS, and not so grateful for the cactus that nailed me on the return trip. 😀

John Samuelson was a miner and rancher for the Keys Ranch. In the 1920s, he built a cabin and began carving messages into the rocks nearby in what is now Joshua Tree National Park. He eventually moved to Los Angeles with his wife, where he then killed two people in Compton. He was declared insane, but later escaped from the hospital. Illuminated by a ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight and a full moon. 251 second exposure. The photo shows the movement of the stars over a long period of time, created by the movement of the earth. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 😀

There are eight rocks with carvings on this hill. Yes, I found all eight.

Otra diversión a pie por 2 km de largo en la oscuridad de la noche a través del desierto para fotografiar esta área, con algunas rocas talladas fascinantes dejados por un antiguo minero y ganadero en la década de 1920s. Agradezco a mi GPS, y no tan agradecido por los cactus que me clavó en el viaje de regreso. 😀

John Samuelson era un minero y ganadero para el Keys Ranch. En el 1920s, el construyó una cabina y comenzó a tallar los mensajes en las rocas cercanas. Con el tiempo se trasladó a Los Ángeles con su esposa, en la que luego mató a dos personas en Compton. Fue declarado loco, pero más tarde se escapó del hospital. Iluminado por una linterna LED 2 ProtoMachines y una luna llena. 251 segundos de exposición. Esta foto muestra el movimiento de las estrellas durante un largo período de tiempo, y se crea por el movimiento de la tierra. No es una creación de post-procesamiento. Star Trails at the OK Corral (4330)

Cowboy up! It’s Pioneertown, California, began as a Wild West motion picture set in the 1940s, with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and others among the original developers and investors. The set was designed for the actors to live while using their homes in the movie. The Cisco Kid and many other Westerns were filmed here. Saloons, jails, banks, all the good stuff you need for a Western town. I illuminated the scene while the camera shutter was open with a hand-held Protomachines LED2 flashlight. The circular star trails were created by the very long e 29 minute total exposure, created by the rotation of the earth.

This is a house built on an enormous set of boulders deep, deep within the Mojave Desert.  I illuminated the boulder and house while the camera shutter was open with a hand-held Protomachines LED2 flashlight. Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8. 87 minute total exposure overall.
