Photo: A Bowl Of Milk (Milky Way in the Owens Valley)

A Bowl of Milk (7203)

This is Owens Valley Radio Observatory in the Owens Valley, CA, listening to the Milky Way. I photographed this coming back from the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest. To my surprise, I was immediately swarmed by aggressive mosquitos during the entire shoot despite wearing wearing a hat and a hoodie. I got quite a few bites on my hands and even my forehead despite wearing a knit cap.

I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

Photo: Luxury by the Lakeside – Abandoned RV Under The Milky Way

Luxury By The Lakeside (7329)

Someone’s former home near Owens Lake in California, a lake that was fairly large before the DWP and the L.A. Aqueduct sucked it dry. Now it’s common to have enormous dust clouds blowing from the lake. But back in the 1870s, steamer ships cruised across the lake, where silver mined from Cerro Gordo was loaded on to the ships to transport across the lake, part of the trip south to Los Angeles.

I illuminated interior and exterior with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. Originally, I was going for a 15 second exposure. I never could get all the “light painting” finished. I made it 16 seconds. That I could do. I can only run so fast. I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

Photo: Remembering – More Relevant Than Ever (Manzanar Milky Way)!

Remembering (7025)

The “Soul Consoling Tower” at the Manzanar cemetery. 120,313 Japanese-Americans were forcibly removed to one of ten concentration camps during WWII. Manzanar in Owens Valley, CA, was one of these sites.

Photographed this near the new moon at night with Ron Pinkerton. I illuminated the tower with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

Photo: The Dark Tower – Manzanar Under The Milky Way

The Dark Tower (7093)

A stark reminder of our dark past, guard tower No. 8 rises above Manzanar Camp. Reconstructed in 2005, it is one of the eight guard towers that surrounded the camp. 120,313 Japanese-Americans were forcibly removed to one of ten concentration camps during WWII. Manzanar in Owens Valley, CA, was one of these sites. I illuminated the tower with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. Photo: Grafton Ghost Town-Long Exposure Night Photo with Light Painting!

Hearth Is The Home (6472)
Grafton ghost town, Utah, first settled in 1859, and also the site of several movies, including the bicycle scene in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. While photographing here, a car pulled up, and some young people got out and began exploring the area for ghosts. They said that they will record on their iPhones, and sometimes, voices that they didn’t hear initially would show up there.

So yeah, this is a real night photo. I illuminated the exterior and interior with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. I wanted to make it look like the family was still home, perhaps relaxing by the fireplace. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 😀 I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

Nikon D610/28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 lens @ 21 minutes total, with seven images stacked, each 3 minutes f/8 ISO 200 on 2017-06-06 21:38.

Photo: The Devil’s Cornfield – Death Valley Like You’ve Never Seen it Before!

The Devil’s Cornfield (6996)
The Devil’s Cornfield, Death Valley, CA. The name is evocative, and the landscape eerie, so I decided to play it up a little with some red light painting during the exposure. I illuminated the foreground with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight while the shutter was open on my tripod-mounted camera. This is not a post-processing creation. No pixels were harmed during the creation of this photo. 😀 I used a Pinout remote controller/app to set and trigger the camera.

As you might guess, that ain’t really corn. Arrow weed features strong, slender stems that were used to make arrow shafts by the Cahuilla and other Southern California settlers.

Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8 lens @ 12 minute total exposure, with each individual photo 4 minutes long f/8 ISO 200 on 2017-06-13 01:28.

Dos Goats Star Trails – 3 Hour Star Trails in the Desert!

Dos Goats Farm Star Trails (6181)

Dos Goats Farm Star Trails (6181)

We stayed at a farm in Pioneertown, CA, a short walk from Pappy and Harriet’s Saloon in the Mojave Desert, where we saw the Mojave Lords and other bands. On Sunday night, after returning to the farm, I set up my camera on a tripod and basically set it to run until the camera battery ran out of juice while I went inside and went to sleep! 😀 The camera battery lasted for 3 hours (I could have used a fresh battery, but 3 hours is long enough!). This is a long exposure night photo facing north. I illuminated the farm feed shed on the inside and outside with a handheld flashlight. The circular star trails shows the movement of the stars circling around the North Star, caused by the rotation of the earth over 3 hours’ time. All the illumination was done during the exposure as usual, and is not a post-processing creation.

Geek stuff: Nikon D610 camera with 14-24mm f/2.8 wide angle lens. 62 photos, all 3 minutes f/8 ISO 500 (for a total exposure of 3 hours 6 minutes), were shot in succession and then stacked using StarStax. Feisol CT-3372 tripod with RRS BH-55 ballhead. Camera controlled with Pinout app and camera controller. Light painting with ProtoMachines LED2 handheld flashlight.

Arch Rock, Joshua Tree National Park: Long Exposure Night Photo with Light Painting

The magical northern part of the Milky Way over Arch Rock, Joshua Tree National Park, California, USA. I light painted the arch, illuminating this with a ProtoMachines LLC LED2 flashlight. But there were other flashlights illuminating the arch as well. The one on the side and the red light were actually done by other people exploring the arch. This was originally a test shot, but I decided I liked the exploratory lights on the arch and went with this. I hope you like it as well.

The Garden of Pompeii: Long Exposure Night Photo with Light Painting, Abandoned Movie Set

 The Garden of Pompeii (4135)

A mysterious abandoned movie lot deep in the Mojave Desert. Everything here was very consistently Roman or Greek looking, and the old set location was littered with columns, some standing, some fallen, as well as busts, statues, reliefs, and stands as well as plaster molds. I illuminated the columns while the camera shutter was open with a hand-held Protomachines LED2 flashlight. Thank you to David Dasinger for taking me here. Nikon D610/14-24mm f/2.8. 300s exposure f/8 ISO 200.
